21 Secrets to Online Marketing Success (Part 1)

Below is part 1 of 3 in a series of 25 Secrets to Online Marketing Success that I wanted to share with you. Just some lessons, I’m learning or have learned and passing along to you.

1. Be yourself. Do not pretend to be someone or something you are not. Your uniqueness will appeal to a certain segment of the market. These folks become your best fans and customers.

2. Follow your passion – do what you love – this doesn’t guarantee financial success but it will help you fulfill your purpose in life. Not doing what you love guarantees a life of boredom and unhappiness. The trick is to find a niche where your passions and interests intersect with the needs of the market.

3. Learn a financially valuable skill so you can command a decent salary or (if you are self-employed) a respectable fee.

4. Those workers and service providers who command top dollar either:
a) perform a service that makes or save their employer or client stress, time, energy or money,
b) have a skill for which the demand exceeds the supply, or
c) specialize in a narrow niche with little competition.
Even better if you can do all three!

5. As you generate income, give away 10% first, pay taxes (30%), with the remaining reinvest in your business in the beginning. As your business grows, the remaining can be divided in half for savings and half for your salary. It’s important to have a 6 months salary in savings so that you’ll never be caught off guard by a decline in the market.

6. Given the choice, have your children when you are young and possess the energy it takes to parent youngsters. My wife Kelly and I will be “empty-nesters” at age 45.

7. Spend as much time as you can with your children when they are young and still want you, even if you must make sacrifices in your professional achievements to do so. This time is passing quickly and once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
