How To Respond When A Member Says “I’ve Found Something Else”

Now, the final reason that people cancel their membership and one that you’ve probably heard is, “I have found something else.”

Many times, a member is not going to tell you they’re leaving you for your competitor. Instead, they just tell you, “I’ve found something else.” They don’t want to let you know that they’re cheating on you with somebody else.  They’re just going to say, “I found something else. I’m going to go in a different direction.”

Now this response usually just comes up after prodding in the conversation. You know, you don’t come right out and say, “Are you going to go with my competitor? Are you going to go down the street to somebody else?” It just usually comes out and says, “Well, I’m going to try this membership program out over here.”

Never Belittle Your Competition

When you do, you’re actually belittling your client, your member. For some reason, they’ve made a decision to go with your competitor. To speak negatively of your competitor is to actually speak negatively toward the decision that they make.

Instead, I want you to show the value that you can bring to your membership and to your member that your competitor won’t bring or isn’t able to bring.   You may not be able to keep them as a member, but you can always leave the door open for the potential that your member may return.

I wanted to hit on those so that we can just look at some of the reasons that people give you for canceling. You can already begin to see that as I’ve laid it out to you, that you begin to say, “Well, yes. You know what? I’ve been told that. I thought that was why they were canceling, but now, I’m beginning to see the reasons that people cancel in a different light.”
